Team 2: Conservation And Valorization Of Phytoresources

This research team aims to assess, conserve and valorize phyto-resources by extracting bioactive compounds and evaluating their biological activities – including nutritional, biostimulant, anticancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties – to explore applications in the agri-food and health sectors.

Research axes

  • Document and catalog traditional knowledge and local uses of aromatic and medicinal plants, establishing a species inventory to identify those with high added value.
  • Assess the distribution, abundance, and conservation status of local phytogenetic resources, identify threatened species and develop conservation strategies, including both in situ and ex-situ approaches (e.g. in vitro culture, seed banks, etc.).
  • Isolate, identify, and characterize bioactive compounds (antioxidants, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, etc.) for potential applications in agri-food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and health sectors.
  • Assess the effects of plant extracts and isolated compounds on biological models to explore therapeutic, biostimulant, or pathogen-protective effects.
  • Develop eco-friendly, efficient extraction and formulation methods to maximize yield and stability of bioactive products.
  • Explore plant-derived products for integration into value chains, such as food supplements, biofertilizers, biostimulants, or natural preservatives.
  • Conduct in genetic selection and plant breeding to develop varieties or rootstocks suited to local conditions (stress resistance, soil adaptation), supporting sustainable agriculture.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to translate scientific findings into market-ready products, integrating plant extracts or compounds into innovative applications.
